How to Root Nexus 5 on Android 5.0 Lollipop

Android 5.0 Lollipop comes with lots of new features and improvement and very soon the Nexus devices will get this update. Before releasing the official update for Nexus device, Chainfire has provided modified kernels for Nexus 5 with SELinux set to permissive only to the limit of rooting Android 5.0. Today in this guide we’ll show you how to root the Nexus 5 on Android 5.0 Lollipop. To do this first you have to first flash the modified boot image, then flash SuperSU zip via a custom recovery (TWRP recommended). The process is little bit lengthy but not so hard and take 5 to 10 minutes to complete the task.

This guide is only for the Nexus 5 android smartphone. Don’t try this method on any of other Android devices, It may hard brick your device. So, first confirm your phone model number in your android phone settings. To do this Go the Settings page of your device and check out the “About Device” option.


Before following the below Mention guide, It’s always recommended to follow our pre-requisites and requirement to stay safe.


Do take the Full Backup of your Android Apps, SMS, Contacts, Call Logs, Bookmarks. This one is one of the most important step that you have to follow, as we don’t want anyone losing their personal data or apps. For help on Backup and Restore check out the below mention guides.


You need these drivers to connect your device with the computer to follow this guide. Without these USB drivers you can’t connect your device to the PC, first download and install these drivers on your system.


Now you need to enable USB debugging mode. Without enabling USB debugging mode on your device you can’t start the root, Custom ROM or Unlock process.



If your device switched off during this process, it could damage or brick the device. Make sure that your Android battery is full charge or near about 50-70% battery level.

After following the above mention steps follow the below mention guide one by one to proceed with the tutorial. All the above mention steps are very important, so do follow all the steps and do exactly what is told.



Step 1. First unlock the boot loader of your phone, if you done already then leave this step.

Step 2. Now install the TWRP recovery on your Nexus 5, read our guide here.

Step 3. Download the modified boot image for Nexus 5 here and extract the folder on your desktop.

Step 4. Now download the ADB Files form here and extract the folder on your desktop.

Step 5. Download and transfer the SuperSU zip file linked below to your phone’s internal storage.

Step 6. Now move the boot.img file (The file that you downloaded on step 3) and paste in on your ADB folder (The same folder that you downloaded and extracted on the Step 4)

Step 7. Connect your phone to PC with a USB cable and if a pop-up screen shows up on phone asking you to Allow USB debugging for the computer, make sure you tick the checkbox and tap OK.

Step 8. Now open the ADB folder on your desktop and Press Shift key + Right click on any empty space inside the folder, and select Open command window here from the context menu.

Step 9. Boot your Nexus 5 into bootloader, to do this enter the following command on command prompt window

adb reboot bootloader

Step 10. Flash the modified boot image by issuing the following command

fastboot flash boot boot.img

Step 11. Once boot.img is successfully flashed on your nexus 5, boot your device into recovery mode. Right now you phone in Fastboot mode, just press the Volume Down button twice and then the Power button to boot into recovery mode.

Once your phone in TWRP recovery, flash the file you downloaded above on Step 5

a) Select “Install” from the main menu
b) Navigate to the folder where you saved/transferred the file and select it.
c) Confirm flashing of the file swiping on the “Swipe to Confirm Flash button”
d) Once done, select “Reboot System“

Enjoy the rooted nexus 5!!!!
