Root Nexus 5 On Android 4.4.2 (KOT49H) – Install CWM Recovery

The process is little bit of lengthy but not so hard. All you have to Flash some files, run commands and you are done. CHECK PHONE MODEL

This guide is only for the Nexus 5 android smartphone. Don’t try this method on any of other Android devices, It may hard brick your device. So, first confirm your phone model number in your android phone settings. To do this Go the Settings page of your device and check out the “About Device” option.

PRE-REQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

Before following the below Mention guide, It’s always recommended to follow our pre-requisites and requirement to stay safe.

1. BACKUP YOUR ANDROID DATA

Do take the Full Backup of your Android Apps, SMS, Contacts, Call Logs, Bookmarks. This one is one of the most important step that you have to follow, as we don’t want anyone losing their personal data or apps. For help on Backup and Restore check out the below mention guides.

2. INSTALL NEXUS 5 DRIVERS

You need these drivers to connect your device with the computer to follow this guide. Without these USB drivers you can’t connect your device to the PC, first download and install these drivers on your system.

3. ENABLE USB DEBUGGING MODE

Now you need to enable USB debugging mode. Without enabling USB debugging mode on your device you can’t start the root, Custom ROM or Unlock process.

4. CHARGE YOU ANDROID

If your device switched off during this process, it could damage or brick the device. Make sure that your Android battery is full charge or near about 50-70% battery level.

GUIDE TO ROOT NEXUS 5 & INSTALL CWM RECOVERY

Step 1. First download the Android ADB and Fastboot drivers on your PC and install it.

Step 2. Once the ADB drivers and Fastboot drivers are setup on your system, open the AndroidADB folder from C:/ Drive and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).

Step 3. Now turn off you phone and boot it Fastboot/Bootloader Mode. To do this Press Volume Down + Power keys for a few seconds till you see some text on the screen. This is Bootloader Mode.

Step 4. Connect your device to the computer with USB cable and run the following command on the Command prompt windows of your desktop.

fastboot oem unlock

This will unlock the bootloader of your Nexus 5. After this your Nexus 5 will now reboot itself. Or you can reboot your phone with the following command if not rebooted automatically.

fastboot reboot

Step 5. Now Download the SuperSU v1.80 (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip) for Nexus 5 on your PC, you need this file to root your device.

Step 6. Download the CWM Recovery file here and move the file on your AndroidADB folder that you create on Step 1.

Step 7. Again connect your device to the computer and move the SuperSU v1.80 (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip) on your device (File that you downloaded on Step 5)

Step 8. Open the AndroidADB folder from C:/ Drive and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).

Step 9. Now turn off you phone again and boot it Fastboot/Bootloader Mode. To do this Press Volume Down + Power keys for a few seconds till you see some text on the screen. This is Bootloader Mode.

Step 10. Type in the following command of the command prompt windows and press Enter.

fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.5-hammerhead.img

Step 11. Once the flashing process is completed, choose RECOVERY from the Fastboot menu (On You Nexus 5) and enter Recovery Mode.

Step 12. Now your device is on ClockworkMod recovery mode, scroll down to “flash zip from SD card” and press the power button to select it.

Step 13. Press the Power button again and select “choose zip from sdcard”. Now use the volume keys, navigate to UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip (File that you copied on your phone on Step 7) and select it using the Power button. Confirm the installation on the next screen and the installation procedure should start now.

Step 14. One the installation process is done, Go Back to the recovery main menu and reboot your device.
