This guide is only for the Nexus 4 android smartphone. Don’t try this method on any of other Android devices, It may hard brick your device. PRE-REQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

1. BACKUP YOUR ANDROID DATA

2. INSTALL NEXUS DRIVERS

3. ENABLE USB DEBUGGING MODE
Now you need to enable USB debugging mode. Without enabling USB debugging mode on your device you can’t start the root, Custom ROM or Unlock process.
4. CHARGE YOU ANDROID
If your device switched off during this process, it could damage or brick the device. Make sure that your Android battery is full charge or near about 50-70% battery level.

HOW TO ROOT NEXUS 4
Step 2. Download the recovery for your device, From the below mention links. You can use CWM or TWRP recovery on your device.
Save the file on your desktop and rename the file to recovery.img.
Step 3. Now move the rename file recovery.img on the ADB folder that you downloaded and extracted on the step 1.
Step 4. Download SuperSU v1.99 (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99.zip) and copy it to your \sdcard on your Nexus 10.
Step 5. Switch off your Nexus device and boot in fastboot mode. Switch off the device and then press the Volume down + Power button. This should get you into Bootloader mode.
Step 6. Now connect your Nexus to the PC with the help of USB cable.
Step 7. Open the ADB folder on the desktop and hold SHIFT key on your keyboard and RIGHT CLICK and select “Open command window here” .
Step 8. Now you will see the command prompt window on the desktop screen. First you have to Unlock the bootloader of your device (Skip this step if already unlocked the bootloader and follow the step 10). Enter the command as “fastboot oem unlock” in the command prompt.
Step 9. On your Nexus, confirm with “Yes” using the Volume keys to move and the Power button to confirm.
Step 10. To flash the recovery on your device. In the command prompt window, enter the following command:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Step 11. Now this will install the custom recovery on your device.
Step 12. Once completed, choose RECOVERY from the Fastboot menu and enter Recovery Mode.
Step 13. Now from the recovery main menu, Choose the “install zip from sdcard” option. Select “choose zip from sdcard”. And press the Power button to select it.
Step 14. After the installation completes, go to “Go Back” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu. The phone will boot now.
That’s it. Now the custom recovery is installed on your device and the device is rooted too
